Books read last week
"The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror" edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling (library, finally finished, was a bit of a hard slog at times. The year is 2001 btw)
"The Year's Best Science Fiction" edited by Gardner R. Dozios (library, and much easier going than the Fantasy one, I thought the stories in general had less of an emphasis on "Look at me, aren't I clever?" and were better stories for it)

I've been a fan of Gardner R. Dozioz as an editor since he took over Issac Asimov's magazine back in the early 90s. He's got a knack for collecting good stories that don't try too hard.

I have to admit to being a big fan of the fantasy compilations, but you're right: they can be very pretentious. Some years are better than others, just as some writers are better than others. If you haven't, I suggest trying some other years. I can't remember which ones are good though! 8) Also, Terri Windling herself wrote a book called 'The Wood Wife', which is excellent. Anyway, there's 2 more pence than you had before. 8 P Have a good Christmas!
