In geeky news I (and J) installed Beryl last night - which does all sorts of cool visual effects for the desktop ... so now my windows vanish in a puff of fire & smoke :D I am possibly rather more amused by this than I should be ;) Oh, and the windows wobble while you drag them around. Can you tell I've spent far too much time yesterday evening & this morning wobbling windows & opening & shutting them ;) The transparency effects are nice too - I've got translucent window borders (and the buttons on the edges are invisible till you mouse-over them - not great for usability I guess, but looks nice). Actually the latter half of that parenthetical comment sums up the whole thing - probably not great for usability, a bit of a resource hog, but hey! it looks cool ;)

translucent borders

I couldn't be bothered to try & take a screenshot of the fire effect or the wobbly windows, so translucent borders is what you get ;)

In other news. Am I the only woman in the world who wants pockets in skirts? Looking through some old photos the other day I was reminded that I used to wear more skirts for everyday - so I was gonna get myself a new skirt. But if it's for everyday then I need pockets - I know I gave in a while ago & got myself a handbag, but I still keep my keys in my pocket so that I can walk out the front door without worrying about locking myself out. And my phone in my pocket for that matter, though that's less essential. And there doesn't seem to be a skirt in the shops that has even a single pocket :/ If I think of another solution to keeping my keys with me I may still buy one though, there's some nice long skirts in the shops at the moment that look durable & plain enough for everyday. God, I'm turning into a real girl. Or back into one, depending on perspective, I guess.

I thought the point of Beryl was that it used the gfx hardware that you're hardly using most of the time anyhow to do most of the work ?

You're quite possibly right. I just assumed that the transparency & stuff would mean it was a resource hog :)

maybe not: it's probably like OSX's quartz system where windows are all drawn and composited using the graphics card using opengl

I generally keep my keys and phone in my jacket pocket, which works fine at this time of year but possibly not so well in summer...

I was thinking more of when I'm just popping out - like to bring the bins back into the garden or something like that (to take an example from today). So my keys are always on my person as soon as I'm dressed, rather than just in my 'outdoor gear'.

I think I'm going to end up with one of those clip things & attaching them to a belt hook (though that won't quite work as I'd rather not have them flapping about on the outside of the skirt).

You're not the only one who wants pocketses! I wear skirts most of the time, and it's a nuisance. Sometimes I just carry my keys in my hand.

I've seen some 'cargo' sorts of skirts that have pockets lower than around the waist, and there's always Utilikilts (though the ones that are officially designated for girls are far too short for my taste, and the boy ones have that whole accommodating a different waist : hip ration thing going on). Depending on how much you sew and how much of a pocket you want, you could put a patch pocket on some skirt.

Unfortunately I don't really sew ...

I should keep an eye out for cargo skirts, that's a good idea :)

Alternate approach: see whether there are shirts for runners that have little pockets and wear pocket-free skirts.

Your desktop looks an awful lot like mine. ;)

And yeah, I really don't understand the skirts-without-pockets thing. It's like they assume if you're girl enough to wear a skirt, you're girl enough to carry a purse. I haven't seen cargo skirts in some time but that doesn't really mean they don't exist anymore, at least :)

Ahh ... but I bet your windows don't go up in flames when you shut them :P
