My brother gave me a copy of his favourite Thai cookery book ("Vatch's Thai Cookbook" by Vatcharin Bhumichitr) for Christmas so I cooked a recipe from that for dinner this evening - Fried Chicken with Garlic and Sesame Seeds (Gai Gna Kratiam). Which was very nice indeed :)

We're now working our way through a rather nice bottle of Merlot from the Beaulieu Vinyard. This is the quietest new year's eve we've had for some years ... the last couple have been spent up north with J's folks - 2001 in Blanchland at the pub getting very drunk indeed in the company of J's parents, 2000 in Newcastle being frozen to death in the company of Jo and Chris (the fireworks were cool). The years before that we've had small parties. Very small, small enough for me to feel capable of cooking dinner for everyone whilst pissed. 1999 Bruce and Nathan and Gordon were here (and Bruce had hysterics at chopping garlic, and later had his first ever hangover, that was quite a successful evening ;) ), 1998 was probably Phil and Gareth and Shital, and I think 1997 was just Gareth. 1996 was just us again, but the boiler died (just after I'd started washing my hair, which meant I had to rinse the shampoo out in freezing cold water), which kinda sucked. That was the first year we lived in Ipswich.

It's odd in some ways not to be doing something but equally, I'm quite run down and tired and it's nice to not have lots of people around and just have me and J :) Maybe next year we'll have another party. But for now, it's nice to relax.
